More from DogTown Thursday, June 24, 2010

Hello everyone!

So a little off the topic of dogs.  I wanted to share some stuff from the other areas of Best Friends Animal Sanctuary.  Since they do so much more than just dogs.

Has anyone heard about the problem with Rabbits at UVIC?  The funny thing is that so many people are aware of the problem but no one seems to know what to do, or want anything to do with it.

While at Best Friends I got to spend some time in with the rabbits there.  There I met Debby.  Debby Widolf is the manager of the Bunny House at Best Friends Animal Society. She oversees the care of around 110 rabbits, manages six staff members, coordinates adoptions, collaborates with rabbit rescue groups, and helps to educate the public about the care and behavior of rabbits

While speaking with her I had mentioned our issues here in Victoria with the rabbits at UVIC and she told me that she was aware of it and had on several occasions tried to contact people with suggestions on how to control the population.  Debbie has just recently assisted rescues in Florida with a simular situation and knows that there are humane ways to deal with the issues.  They implimented a TNR (trap, neuter, release) program and it has been extremely successful.

Debby has yet to hear  back from anyone and to my knowledge there still isnt anything being done about the overpopulation of Rabbits at UVIC.  If you know otherwise or are interested in more I would love to hear about it, as would Debby.

Updates from Best Friends Animal Sanctuary Monday, June 21, 2010
While at Best Friends we had a number of people who run special programs give us speeches. I will post some of the different stuff that I learnt about and if anyone has question and/or comments post it here and I will do my best to answer them.
One of the programs at Best Friends is called Puppies aren’t products. This is a program developed to try and stop the puppy mills through things like awareness and legislation.
I really enjoyed the way the staff there presented their information. They always managed to make it very hopeful even though what goes on is extremely saddening.
The one thing that was dificult was all of their information was based on the states. Being in Canada is going to take a little bit of research to find out what goes on in our country. Looks like I will have to contact Angela at ShutDownPuppyMill.com

Meshum is back from DOGTOWN Friday, June 18, 2010

Check back often for Meshum's posts of her experiences at DOGTOWN.   She just returned from a one month internship at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary.

The Best Friends Animal Sanctuary is on 38,000 acres at Angel Canyon, in southern Utah.  It is home on any given day to about 2,000 dogs, cats, and other animals, who come from shelters and rescue groups around the US.

A blurb from their website: Most of the animals who find their way to Best Friends have special physical or behavioral needs, and the expert staff of veterinarians, trainers and caregivers offer them all the help they require.  Most of them are ready to go to good new homes after just a few weeks of special care.  A few, who are too old or too sick, or who have suffered extra trauma, find a home and haven at the sanctuary, and are given loving care for the rest of their lives.

Over the next couple of weeks, Meshum will elaborate on the experiences she had and note the pros and cons to such a large establishment.  If you have questions, post to the blog so Meshum can respond.

DOGTOWN Hydro Therapy Pool Thursday, June 10, 2010

Meshum wrote....

Today I got to help out at Hydro Therapy.  It was really cool. The Sanctuary  had a group donate the money so they could have their own pool.

They have  so many dogs here at the sanctuary that need it that they have the pool  running everyday.

The dog in the picture is Chika and she had her ACL  surgery about 8 weeks ago.  Her favorite part of hydro is the towel down after.

Updates from DOGTOWN Monday, June 7, 2010

June 6th from Meshum...

My project dog’s name is JuneBug and she is a Treeing walker coon-hound.  Don't ask me why I picked a hound, looking for a challenge maybe.  The other dog with her is her run mate.  His name is Timon and he reminds me allot of Shrek.
JuneBug  is doing good.  I have had several trainers comment to me on how different she is since I started training with her.  She has really calmed down.  The volunteers actually enjoy walking her.  JuneBug is one of the more adoptable dogs at the sanctuary.  She lives at the Gardens.
We have our last class this week and then I am supposed to do something for her to help her get adopted.  Like a scrap book or something.  I am not sure what yet but if anyone has any ideas let me know.

Hi Meshum, Everyone here misses you & wants to hear what you are doing... that is after your hour and a half bike ride to DOGTOWN. OK, you get off your bike and....? How is the project dog doing? A Tennessee Hound or have you had more than one? Do they have issues like lacking confidence or worldly skills. Obviously not like the dogs that we have at K9HQ - they learn the best dog - dog skills and people skills here. We are sure that you can share your knowledge with not only the dogs, but the people. You after all do bring alot to the table. Hope it's a lifetime experience & you are taking lots of pictures. Can you download them to Youtube or Facebook? We have the Pet Adoption Fundraiser this weekend (Sunday 10-5pm) and are hoping to help out the Rescue groups by raising money, awareness & of course ADOPTIONS. So, we will have abit to share with you on your return as well. Oh yeah, we have a couple new dogs - Kobi - fabulous mix - kind of like a black Jack with floppy ears and - Jersey - a Harlequin Great Dane. Both have been great fun! Talk with you soon.

Hey everyone, Well I am half way thrue my internship and really missing home. To pass the time faster I have had a few sleep overs with dogs from the sanctuary. An awsome way to get the dogs out there meeting people and socialized. I have spent all my time up at dog town since after the first week and am really getting to know the dogs and people here. Dog town has tons of trainers that all work here together and they all have diffrent programs within the sanctuary and all around the country. I have been taking lots of notes and hope that when I get back there will be some things that are going to benifit K9HQ training classes. Make sure that everyone who reads this that brings there dog to daycare gives them a hug for me. Lunch time is over for me. Take care Meshum

AGILITY QUESTIONS Tuesday, May 4, 2010

So, you heard about the dog sport of Agililty, maybe even saw it in a demo or on TV but have questions.

K9HQ hosted some free information sessions and has started teaching some classes.  All the classes filled up, but people are still asking - so we have decided to take a WAITLIST.

If we get a few interested people, we will hold another information session and start a new class.

If you are interested, call or email K9HQ.  All we need is your name, phone number, and email address to get you on the waitlist.

Had a nice hike down to Witty's. Tide was on it's way out - the plan is to return again at LOW tide. Saw the lady with the Akita that chased down my "Bean". This time she had her on a leash - thank goodness. All in all the weather was nice and the company enjoyable. Till next time...

Tiffany's Vacation Adventure Thursday, March 11, 2010

Tiffany is on vacation & is boarding at my house ~ Yippee!   She is joining Tia Maria, Glayva, Eyesome, and my two cats.

We're calling it Tiffany's Vacation Adventure and plan on doing something new and adventurous each day.

Sleep #1 Everyone ate dinner & went out in the drizzle to do their business & ended up staying out romping around for a half hour or more.  Once they had their towel off, they ended up with the zoomies and are just settling down now at nearly 9pm.

to be continued.....

Had a pretty lazy Sunday! The dogs entertained themselves with the new toys I picked up the other day. Long skinny stuffed toys call "the 3 Amigos" - a Giraffe, Lion, and a Tiger. Not sure why they call them amigos, I would have thought 2 predators and prey. I digress - they love them - tugging & playing chase. We went to the park today where they charged around after each other, the ball, and some other dogs. Then they all took part in rolling on "something" that smelled pretty sweet to them. I couldn't see anything except dirt. Ended up leaving a little earlier than planned when Tia landed wrong and was limping on her front leg. They all had a warm shower and are just starting to lift their heads up to kitchen sounds after snoozing for the last hour or so. Tia isn't limping anymore - hope it was just a minor twist & that's the end of it. All in all it was a great B day and opened a nice gift from the Tiff - THANK YOU!! I have about 30 minutes left of computer time before Glayva starts pestering me for dinner - should get going. Back to work tomorrow....

Nice life! Beach run, warm shower, snooze, dinner... Hopefully my girl was a quiet little Chihuahua all night. Hugs Tiff! Mom PS Did you tell Deb about the "Show Me Your Toes" trick?
